Carnival begins in Sion on 8th February. Big parade on Saturday 10th.
The costumes and confetti are in the shops, the posters are around the town and the tents have been assembled in the main square, all in readiness for Sion Carnival which begins on Thursday 8th and continues until Tuesday the 13th February. There are events going on every day – see programme here.
The theme of the event this year is “Pile ou Face” (Heads or Tails!)
Note: There will be a Carnival Meet-Up event organised by the Valais English Club on Friday, February 9th at 19:00.
One of the biggest events is the main parade which takes place on Saturday 10th February at 14:30. The parade will wind through the town along Grand-Pont -Rue du Rhone – Place du Midi – Avenue de la Gare and Avenue du Ritz.
Over 800 participants take part in this parade and it’s great fun to watch! There is a party atmosphere in the town, music from the many Guggenmusik bands and hundreds of people, either dressed in costume or on a themed float, take part in the celebrations. See our previous post about the carnival here.
Carnival has already begun in other parts of the Valais. There was a parade in the village of St-Martin on Saturday 3rd February. The sun shone that day in this village high up in the Val d’Hérens. See photos below.
